I looked at A LOT of Earth Day books, and for the most part I was really disappointed. The books were all either too far over M and M’s heads or they lacked the explanation of why we need to participate in protecting our planet. Luckily I found two winners, and they are good enough to get the job done!

When I first saw this book I figured it was more of a baby book. I’m a so glad I didn’t go with that reaction. I brought it home and found it to be a perfect introduction to Earth Day. The pictures are cute and the story is simple. The thing that I love about it is that the author walks through everyday ways we can protect our planet. She gives examples in a way that is easy for kids to understand. She also adds in an explanation as to why it is important to follow these steps. ”See, Biscuit? I must turn off the water when I brush my teeth. I don’t want to waste a drop.” I love, love, love it!
Alright, this is not a book. . .but it is fantastic! Like Biscuit’s Earth Day Celebration, this movie explains how important the little things are. With Sesame Street’s charm, the characters are cute and fun. The movie runs 47 minutes and covers what it means to be green. I really like that it speaks to the kids about being green always, and doesn’t hit on just Earth Day. The issues Elmo and Abby cover are recycling and reusing discarded items. They even learn what the earth is. A satilite view zooms into a city view. What a great way to take a hard to understand concept and lay it out simply.
Throughout the movie there are three monsters answering phones. They are accepting pledges for kids, pledges to do their part. I love the message that everyone can get involved, and that it really is easy to make a difference.
Have a wonderful EARTH DAY!
