Welcome to A Mom with a Lesson Plan. I’m Jill (or Jillian depending on who you ask) and this little blog has been my passion for over 4 years now. The amount of posts that actually go out depends on how many backyard mud parties, cuddle sessions, or story times I’m invited to. I try to post 4-5 days a week. That works for me because my goal has always been to spread the word about playful learning and simple parenting while actually participating in playful learning. A Mom with a Lesson Plan gives me the opportunity to do both. I am one lucky girl!
About the Mom with the Plan
I would like to start out by saying I’m a lot less planned than you would think. But then Hubs might read this and make me change that statement. The truth is I would LIKE to be a lot less planned than I am, I’m constantly working to improve myself (with “be more spontaneous” at the very top of the list).
My Hubby is my best friend and if I can figure out a way to work side by side with him we will happily spend every single second of the rest of our lives together. The thought makes me smile. We have two kids. One boy, one girl and that’s enough for us. They are growing and growing before our eyes, as kids tend to do. Big M is 9 (2005) and Little M is 8 (2007).
Apparently I hate work sheets (and busy work) as much now as I did when I was in school. Now I’m a lot more vocal about it. I love kid’s play. Storytelling, art, movement… everything. This makes me a very fun Aunt. Which is good because my entire family lives within 30 miles of my house. (In-laws included). That means I have never hired a “real” babysitter.
There is a another part of my life that doesn’t get much attention on the blog. I was a surrogate mother. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Something I had always wanted to do and something I will be forever grateful for.
I have loved to write since I was a kid but until writing for A Mom with a Lesson Plan I was never dedicated enough to practice my writing skills on a daily basis. This blog has changed my life.
About the Blog
I started A Mom with a Lesson Plan as a way to share some of the fun things I was doing with my own kids. With a background in Early Childhood, I knew I had something special to share with other parents. What I didn’t expect was all the learning I would be doing along the way. Running the blog is the best way for me to practice what I preach.
Playful Learning. Here’s what I know: kids who love to learn can learn anything. My goal is to raise my kids with a passion for learning. For them to see me and their Dad learning. For us to engage in learning TOGETHER as a family! A Mom with a Lesson Plan is full of activities that hit kids on a playful level. We don’t sneak learning in… we make learning so much fun, the kids are excited about it.
We study the butterfly life cycle using caterpillars from our backyard, we use pretend play to learn about being responsible for pets, we combine math and movement to practice addition. I want to create an environment where actively searching out learning experiences is part of the normal day to day. Here on A Mom with a Lesson Plan I share all of the learning fun we have.
Playful Parenting. I believe in positive parenting. Does that mean our house is free from parental yelling? Nope. Does it mean I have the same incredible level of patience I had before kids? No way! It means that I strive to be a better parent all the time. It means I am constantly reassessing our parenting situation. It means when things are crazy and out of control (and the kids are bouncing off the walls) I know a playful and positive reboot is in order.
I find that most parenting problems have a simple solution. (Good thing because we are too tired to try anything complicated!) When I find a solution that works for us, I share it on A Mom with a Lesson Plan. When I wrote about how to get my kids to go to bed (after many terrible nights of arguing), I quickly found out we were not the only ones with the problem. I’ve talked about conflict resolution, what to say to kids when they confess, teaching kids about personal space and a ton of other stuff. I’m sure M and M will give me plenty more reasons to come up with more simple parenting solutions… so stay tuned!
