Have you heard of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom? If not, get in the car and drive to the bookstore. . .you MUST own this book! Between teaching preschool and reading to my own little ones, no other book has had the reaction that Chicka Chicka Boom Boom creates. EVERY child loves it, EVERY child recites it, EVERY child requests it. Do you want to know a little more? Sure.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault illustrated by Lois Ehlert
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a story of 26 lower case letters who climb a tree. The words are more like lyrics (they are so well written) and you basically sing your way through the story. Once all of those little guys make it up the tree, BOOM BOOM, you guessed it. . .there was not enough room. All of the upper case letters come to the rescue. The pictures are simple, and engaging. This one is probably at the very top of my book love list, and if you’ve read my book reviews you know I LOVE BOOKS!
It’s hard for me to believe, but I have actually never done a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activity. It’s about time.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Flannel Story
We have a flannel board and collection of fun flannel pieces, which I spent a lot of time making. Too much apparently because I have the only two kids who aren’t into flannel stories. This time is different (and perhaps will inspire use of the other many stories that have been shelved.) I had Big M and Little M make their own!
what you need: flannel board ~ felt letters ~ felt pieces ~ scissors
I placed the book on the table along with the felt pieces and a two pair of kid scissors. Big M jumped right in and cut the coconuts.
I was amazed at the detail he was able to recreate with the leaves. His tree is perfect. . .can you feel the Momma pride through the computer?
Little M did her own version of the tree, and I was equally proud. She even stuck it out through her frustration with the coconuts and ended finishing her tree.
I found a quiet little area for the flannel board and put the book with it. I already had some felt letters, so i just added those. I can’t wait to spend today reading and playing with this one!
