the importance of comments

As an extension of yesterdays housekeeping post, I thought I would make a request.  I have discussed this with everyone who will listen to me blab about my blog, and have had mixed reactions on whether to even mention this or not.  The thing is… I firmly believe in asking for what you want.  It’s really the best way to actually get what you want.  So here it goes.

I am asking you to leave me comments.  Not on every post, but once in a while.  While I understand that you just may be a quiet group of readers (I know you’re there… I can see the numbers) comments are actually pretty important.  Want to know why?

Why leave comments?

  1. When I write these posts I’m basically having a conversation with you.  I can’t see your expression, or hear your response, I don’t know if you are begging for more or moving on.   A quick “hey, I liked this one.” would help me out a lot.
  2. I want to add and change things, but I don’t want to stray from where my heart is… inspiring a love of learning.  When I try something new and get no feedback I have no idea if I should continue or cut it.
  3. Other people may benefit from what you say or ask.  If a question pops into your mind, no matter how simple, there are probably others with the same question.  If you have an idea that might enhance the activity, WRITE IT!!!!  You just may inspire another reader to do a project they wouldn’t have otherwise done.
  4. It’s an ego boast.  Okay… so this one is not really that important except that I do spend a lot of time working on this blog.  A little pat on the back would be nice ;).

So now that you know why leaving comments is important, you may be wondering what to write.

How to leave comments.

  1. Extend the conversation.  Don’t worry too much about how it sounds or looks.   Just talk to me!
  2. Make it quick.  If all you want to say is YEAH!  It’ll make me smile… I promise!
  3. Make it looooong.  I would love to spend sometime getting to know YOU!!!  So pour your heart out!
  4. If you have a blog click the Comment Luv button just before you post.  This will leave a link to your most recent post.
  5. If you want to hear what others are commenting after you (or what my response is to your comment) click the subscribe to these comments box.  You can also subscribe to comments without leaving a comment, if you want to know what others will say.  (The box is just below the Comment Luv box)

Okay, so I’ve told you what I want.  Now tell me what YOU want!

You made a real good point. Comments are so important. They really make you smile, it is so nice to know what someone thinks about your writing.
My problem is I read my blogs in google reader, and you can’t post a comment from there (that I know of). I wish there was a way!
Anyway, thanks for all you do!

I want to steal that quote from you and use it in my life. At work, at home, and with my family! <3

Consider me a frequent commenter! :D

LOVE your blog! I’ve never commented before (Sorry!) but I have used several of your ideas and they’ve worked out great! I’m always looking for things to do with my two young toddlers (I have a 3 1/2 year old boy, and a 2 year old girl), and your projects/activities are fun and creative!

Thanks for all the time that you put into your blog! It’s one that I ALWAYS read. Sometimes I just read it through my email (I’m subscribed), and I love that too!

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. It is nice to know that you have been using my ideas… and that you read my blog frequently (blush).

M and M are 18 months apart. Probably pretty close to yours? It is so much fun having them so close, and it only gets better ;).

Thank you for subscribing, and have a great weekend!

THANK YOU!!! Can I copy and paste this whole post to my blog? LOL I love my blog but I feel like I am taking time away from my family and myself to do things and write out these for followers, yet when asked questions I rarely hear from them :( Kinda deflates me and makes me not want to keep it up. And have actually stopped making a few of the printables I had because I don’t know if anyone is using them and I had stopped using them. :(

Ok enough whining…you totally hit the nail on the head! :)

Um yeah take what you want… just make sure to link it back to me ;). I think we’re all in it together and obviously I am not alone in the “I WANT COMMENT” area. Try not to let it deflate you though, use other ways to measure readership too. Pageviews, shares on bookmarking sites, etc. Thanks for the comment!

Wow! You have proven your point & how! You asked for comments & are getting them, even from me. I must admit I love getting comments, but can be slack in actually providing them myself as I often don’t get the chance to chheck out others’ blogs, or if I do then a quick read is ooften all I manage. I’ll definitely make an effort now. you’ve shamed me into action, maybe.

No shame!!! Just a request, that’s all. Everyone who comes her is either a parent, a teacher, or both… WE’RE BUSY!!! Just let me know if you especially love something… :)

I totally agree with everything you have said in this post – I always try to comment, esp if I am inspired by a post or have tried something similar already.

One thing though people, make it easy to comment on your blog – some sites force you to log in first and often my blog account won’t let me post comments! Also those captcha codes are really annoying and put me off.

New to the blog world and love it! Thank you for your informative posts! I am guilty of checking in on my phone and being in a rush, failing to respond. I DO appreciate your posts and will try to make a better effort to respond!! Thank you! :) Happy Thanksgiving!

I agree. Comments really keep me going! I feel when I get no comments….sometimes I should just stop blogging. Like you said…people are out there. Especially with the holidays approaching, it seems I have less comments or maybe my post are not as interesting? I’m so glad that you posted this because it makes me feel that it is not just me receiving comments. Hope this comment makes your day!

When I was new to the blog world, I learned one important rule – if you want to receive comments, start visiting other blogs, participate in carnivals and comment, comment, comment. As a very minimum, visit a blogger who leaves you a comment and respond in kind. Just a hint :)
